Richard B. Macklin graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and went onto become a career Marine. He graduated from Parachute School in Lakewood, New Jersey but took part in the invasion of Gavutu as a member of the infantry. Richard was injured before reaching shore. Jake Dillon met Macklin at Lakewood and again at the Army Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dillon personally requested Macklin's help for the War Bond tour.
