Rialla is the child of the nomadic Traders. She is raised with her clan, helping her father train horses. Rialla has the talent of empathy, meaning that she can sense and communicate with the emotions of the people and animals around her. When Rialla is a teenager and engaged to be married to a boy she has met once, slave traders attack her clan and kill almost everyone. As most of her friends and family are tortured and murdered, Rialla is in so much pain that her empathic talent shuts down. Rialla is a beautiful girl and an amazing dancer, with emerald-green eyes and red hair. She is trained as a dancer, the most valuable kind of slave, and her face is tattooed. Rialla escapes from slavery, and is brave enough to burn off her tattoo with a hot knife. She trains as a mercenary, becoming a good fighter. When the Spymaster asks Rialla to return as a spy, she is afraid, but she decides to do it in the hope of ending slavery for everyone.
