Private Hollister is the soldier that Jamie works with at the rec center. Jamie thinks he is only about 19 years old. He has freckles that cover his nose and other areas of his face. The private challenges Jamie to game of gin rummy, where they keep score throughout the entire summer, to see who wins.
Private Hollister also encourages Jamie to learn how to develop film. He refers Jamie to Sgt. Byrd to learn the developing process. Private Hollister is really a radio operator, which is the duty he returns to after his assignment at the rec center, but the private convinces Jamie to talk her father out of signing his orders that will send him to Vietnam.
