President Nelson Mandela was born in 1981 and served as the President of South Africa between 1994 and 1999. Imprisoned on charges of non-aggressive anti-apartheid activities, Mandela spent twenty-seven years in jail before becoming President. In the book, Tutu praises Mandela and sees him as a spiritual leader of the South African people. He praises Mandela for an acute sensitivity not only to the machinations of political life but to the spiritual nature of the struggle against apartheid. It is obvious that Tutu admired Mandela and only took on the role of leading the TRC because Mandela asks him to.
