Polia is a young widow who lives in a tenement with her son, Eco. Not much is revealed about Polia's past or how she came to be living in poverty in Rome. Once attractive, the stress of poverty and caring for her son alone have aged Polia prematurely. Polia eventually abandons her son and disappears.
