Pila of Hawaii is the author of the book, William "Pila" Chiles. He is interested in the myth of Hawaii and why so many people consider the islands to be a paradise. He says that after his first visit to the islands, he couldn't stop thinking about them and kept returning. Chiles is a veteran of the Viet Nam War and first visited the islands when he was in the military service. Hawaii was then a break from the miseries of heavy combat and represented peace of mind. But the thoughts of Hawaii stayed with him. He returned to Kona, trying to recover from the war. He would use the sunsets for reflections, trying to put his life back together.
