Peter Timoshenko is the radio operator on the Ilya Pogodin. It is Timoshenko who first brings to the attention of the captain the situation regarding the Edgeway scientists. Timoshenko is monitoring radio transmissions around the polar ice caps as part of their clandestine mission and he picks up Gunvald's conversations with the military base at Thule. Later Timoshenko talks with the stranded scientists and relays to them the plan for rescue. Without Timoshenko, the rescue might not have happened.
