Pete is Andrew's older brother who died while at war. Pete was a stellar basketball player and now Andrew wants to be one to make Pete proud. As Andrew struggles to do this, he learns secrets about his family that he never knew before, such as the fact that Pete was conceived before his parents married. This calls Pete's morals into question in the minds of some of the townspeople, but Andrew finally realizes that Pete was the good, moral person he always thought he was.
