Pericles was a famed Athenian, who authored a famous funeral oration, which spoke of the need to balance the words of a eulogy based on what the audience expected and would believe. Pericles points out that the people who know and love the deceased are biased.... those who didn't aren't, and that his job as orator was to "procure, as far as I am able, the good-will" of those listening.
