Owein is one of Arthur's chief warriors and is known as "The Knight of the Lion". He is the son of Urien and becomes the ruler over a territory when he marries the Lady of the Fountain. His marriage includes the responsibility of guarding the magical rain-making fountain in the nearby woods.

Owein is described as chivalrous, courteous, and a champion to the weak and oppressed he encounters on his travels. He is the first member of Arthur's court to greet Peredur.

Owein has a warband known as the Flight of Ravens, which appear as actual birds in The Dream of Rhonabwy. His character is seen as the personification of the Sun or the Waning Year. His adventures symbolize the cycle of the seasons.
