Oliver North is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps who becomes deeply involved in the Iran-Contra scandal. It is suspected that North directed the sales of weapons to the Iranian government and then attempted to destroy evidence of his involvement and the involvement of others. At the beginning of the scandal, Thompson is sure that North will face jail time and will be forced to implicate either President Reagan or Vice President Bush if he wants to avoid it. However, when North testifies before the House of Representatives, he makes himself seem like a national hero and begins to be perceived as one by many people.
