Oedipus is the main character in the Sophocles tragedy, Oedipus Rex. He unknowingly kills his father and sleeps with his mother. After learning of his crimes, he blinds himself by stabbing his eyes. Freud believed that a lot of men had an Oedipus complex that causes them to desire their mothers and kill their fathers.
