These three men are portrayed in Part 9 ("Grown Men") as key figures in the development of the author's nature/humanity sensibilities. Through them, he suggests, he learned about some of the important aspects of being a responsible, respectful human being, and of how to carry those aspects of human /human relationship into the human/nature relationship.
