Noel Keeling, Ambrose and Penelope's son, has little in common with his mother. He loves high society and embraces wealth and status..... even though he hs neither. Noel's choice in friends has little to do with bonding and everything to do with what they can do for him.

When Noel becomes aware of the value of Lawrence Stern's paintings, he badgers his mother to sell the unfinished panels and The Shell Seekers. Noel even goes so far as to help his mother clean out her attic in the hopes of finding sketches that predated the paintings. After Penelope's death, he celebrates his inheritance rather than mourning the loss of his mother.
