Who is Noah Merry from Caleb's Crossing: A Novel and what is their importance?

Noah Merry is a merchant's son. His father is a properous trader on the section of the island where Bethia makes her home. Noah initially appears to be a possible suitor for Bethia's hand in marriage. Later, however, he falls in love and becomes engaged to another woman.
