Who is Noah Merry from Caleb's Crossing: A Novel and what is their importance?

Noah Merry is a merchant's son. His father is a properous trader on the section of the island where Bethia makes her home. Noah initially appears to be a possible suitor for Bethia's hand in marriage. Later, however, he falls in love and becomes engaged to another woman. He and Bertha become close friends, and he assists her during some very trying circumstances. Years later, his daughter marries Bethia's son.
