Nickie DeGrumo is a businessman who, with his wife and her family, runs a successful motel business outside of Meriwether. Nickie has attempted multiple other business, but all of them have failed, leaving the gossips in town under the impression that the motel is run by Mama D.'s mob connected family. While investigating the death of Raymond Duffy, Nickie hires Milo to watch a woman who is reportedly the mistress of a friend of Nickie's. Nickie instructs Milo to drop all his other cases in order to concentrate on this single case. Milo agrees, but continues to work the Raymond Duffy case anyway while his friend Freddy handles Nickie's case. Eventually Milo realizes that Nickie is behind the increase in drugs in Meriwether and that he most likely is responsible in some part for Raymond's death. Nickie has a heart attack when Milo confronts him with this theory.
