Nemo Curliss lives in Zephyr during the summer of 1964. When they first meet, Cory discovers that Nemo has a talent for throwing baseballs. Nemo's mother, however, refuses to allow him to play because she feels thinks he is too fragile for rough sports. Cory and his friends are disappointed because Nemo could have helped them win the season. During their brief friendship with Nemo, Cory and his friends are attacked by the Branlin boys because they defend Nemo, an event that causes the boys terrible injuries and leaves Johnny looking for revenge.
