Penelope's oldest daughter, Nancy is ultimately the reason why Penelope marries Ambrose Keeling. She is named after a suggestion from Ambrose's mother, a woman that Nancy will have a close relationship with until her death. Conversely, Nancy does not have a close relationship with Penelope and has little in common with her. She loves her father and does not see all of his myriad of problems, including cheating on Penelope, treating her poorly and gambling away much of the family's income.
