Musui's father is described as a strict disciplinarian who nearly disowns his son for running away and his other troubles. To teach Musui a lesson, his father imprisons him in a cage for three years. While imrpisoned, Musui learns to read and write, and he also calms down. Despite their disagreements, Musui is fond of his father. When his father dies, he observes a long period of mourning.
