Mumbi is a beautiful woman from a good family. Kihika is her brother. Admired by many of the men in the village, Mumbi is drawn to Gikonyo, and they later marry. Their marriage begins happily, but after Gikonyo is arrested, she is left on her own to fend fr herself. She builds a new house and works in the trenches while her husband is away. She takes care of her parents, Gikonyo's mother, and herself. After digging out the trench, Mumbi goes to work on a tea plantation, yet, all her money goes to feed her family and send her brother to school. In the end, after Gikonyo is finally able to return home, the couple has experienced too many things separately to once again feel like a couple..... a barrier has been erected between them that they are unable to breach.
