Ms. Pigza, Joey's mother, has been abandoned by her husband, who she chooses to follow, and as a result, she leaves Joey with her abusive mother. She returns to Joey after years of drunkenness and finds a boy with severe hyper-attention disorders. She also learns that her mother has been both physically and mentally abusive to him. Determined to give her son a better life, she sets rules for the household. When Grandma is unable to follow the rules, she takes off and leaves her daughter to deal with Joey on her own. When Joey addresses her drinking problem, it becomes clear she loves her son and cares for him deeply. By the end of the novel, it is clear that Ms. Pigza has also changed as a result of Joey's new found peace and that she too finally believes Joey's situation can improve.
