Mrs. Cavendish runs the domestic services for officers in Brisbane under the direct command of General MacArthur. She is a plump, 50-ish, matronly woman who is both efficient and orderly. She has a husband and two sons in military service in the Royal Australian Army, Navy and Air Force stationed in Africa. Brigadier General Pickering introduces her to newly-arrived Marine Corps Capt. Ed Sessions as someone "you disobey at your peril."
