The woman who lives just down the hall from Mrs. Pollifax, she is widely traveled and intimidates Mrs. Pollifax. Mrs. Pollifax likens it to disappointing a childhood teacher in that she feels she has done something always to earn Mrs. Heartshorne's disapproval. The attitudes of the two women change after Mrs. Pollifax's return, probably because Mrs. Pollifax has a new lease on life and a new sense of self-confidence.
