Mrs. Butler was the wife of the Army chaplain of Emma's company. In the first two years of Emma's enlistment, Mrs. Butler, like everyone else, believed Emma to be a man named Private Franklin Thompson. When Emma discovered, however, that her good friend, James Vesey, had been killed, she went to Mrs. Butler for comfort and soon revealed her true identity. Emma initially believed that Mrs. Butler would report her, but she was wrong. Over time, Mrs. Butler assisted Emma with her disguises, tended to Emma when she was wounded, and became a dear and trusted friend.
