Mr. Klein is Will and Melissa's devoted father. Will makes a special note of the fact that his father is willing to do everything for his family, but is actually quite unsympathetic to those outside the family. Klein is especially devoted to Ken, and over the course of the novel, Will learns that Mr. Klein bought Ken's way out of a stabbing in which a boy was killed when Ken was a child.
