Captain Pantoja's mother, Leonor Pantoja, is completely loyal to her son. He can do no wrong in her eyes. Leonor is described as a good-natured woman, who takes advantage of her son's esteemed position as an Army officer. Over the course of the novel, Leonor becomes a devotee of Brother Francisco and the Brothers of the Ark. Her primary reason for joining the sect is social.
