Mother appears in the story, The First Day. She is seen only from the perspective of her young daughter. The mother is uneducated and cannot write. She is determined, however, to make sure her daughter gets a good education. Initially, she takes her daughter to the wrong school. Eventually, however, they end up in the right place.
