Who is Mom from Black Ice and what is their importance?

Lorene's mother, referred to as Mom in the text, is described as black, proud, attractive, and ambitious. Wanting the best for all of her children, she is heartbroken when it comes time to send Lorene to St. Paul's School. In her heart, however, she knows that this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
