Mike is a Marine. He once captured a North Vietnamese soldier and spent several days torturing him. Upon leaving the Marines, Mike went on to have a successful career in business. He was, however, haunted by his actions during the war. Marlantes uses Mike as an example of how combat can change a person's perspective and behavior.
