Merton Densher is a journalist. He is intelligent, good company, and delightful to be around. He does not, however, enjoy the same social status as the crowd he runs with. He is in love with Kate Croy, the niece of wealthy Maud Lowder. Unfortunately, Kate's aunt will never agree to their marriage because of their societal differences.

When Kate tells Merton of her plan to have him marry a mortally ill young heiress from America..... he goes along with it. He follows the young woman, an heiress, to Venice, and visits with her....... but honorably, he cannot go through with the plan. In the end, Kate chooses money over love.
