Who is Max Sorrel from The Cat Who Saw Red and what is their importance?

Max Sorrel owns the Golden Lamb Chop, a succuessful restautant. After rumors begin to spread about the restaurant, business falls off and Max is almost ruined. We later learn that the Penniman brothers not only started the rumors..... they wished to ruin him in order to take over his location.
