Max Kormann was one of Etty Hillesum's closest friends. They met shortly after Etty arrived at Westerbork. Kormann was one of the refugees who sailed on the SS St. Louis for Cuba. He was later transported to the Netherlands for internment. Kormann survived the war and joined his family in the United States (1946), where he died in 1962. Most of Etty's letters were written to Osias Kormann from her time in Amsterdam.
