Maureen Watson is the daughter of a middle class family, who has many advantages. Though she occasionally dates, Maureen is careful not to give in to the demands of boys, which results in a lack of suitors. She drops out of school at fifteen and goes to work in her parents' store. She later realizes that she hadn't made the best decision and talks her parents into sending her to secretarial school. Maureen resents the fact that her mother wants her to live out a particular kind of life and make a certain kind of marriage. Maureen's ambitions, however, are set aside when she settles for marrying Stanley.
