Kate's aunt, Maud Lowder, is wealthy, controlling, manipulative, and self-centered. Her greatest desire is to mold Kate into the daughter she never had. Maud has introduced Kate to London society and supports Lord Mark's marital suit. Kate, however, is uninterested in the man her aunt has chosen for her.

When Milly Theale comes to London from America, Maud sees an opportunity to promote marriage between Milly and Merton Densher, the man Kate wants to marry. She believes that Densher can be manipulated by wealth, and she is wrong. Kate, however, has a plan of her own. She intends to marry Densher after Milly dies. In the end, Maud's goal is achieved, as Densher and Kate end their relationship on their own.
