Mary Maloney appears in the story, Lamb to the Slaughter. She is the pregnant wife of a policeman, who arrives home from work one day and announces that he is leaving her. Mary suppresses her emotions and convinces him to stay for dinner anyway. Sadly, the dinner she provides him is a frozen leg of lamb that she uses to bludgeon him to death. Mary then goes to the local grocery story, picks up a few items to provide herself with a cover story, and puts the lamb in the oven. When the police arrive, she serves them lamb while they ponder what the murder weapon could have been.
