In "Duck Hunters' Wives," the name of "Martha" is given to the ideal frontier woman of a bygone era, the type of wife who could cook, clean, sew, and perform all manner of household duties with high skill and general excellence. Most importantly, perhaps, she understands (if not embraces) the hunting life, and she will tolerate, and even encourage, a husband's duck hunting eccentricities.
