Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was a young widow when she was introduced to George Washington. Martha was a wealthy widow, something that made her a, attrative prospect for a man with Washington's political ambitions. Their marriage was happy and long-lasting, Martha even stayed close to her husband during the eight years he led the Continental Army, accompanying him on the long, hard trips, which also served to boost the morale of the troops. Martha was happy when the war ended, and her husband returned to Mount Vernon. Thus, when he decided to accept the Presidency, she was unhappy with his choice. She did, however, fulfill her duties as First Lady with style.
