in The Heretic's Daughter, Martha Carrier is Sarah's mother. She is a strong woman and eventually ends up sacrificing her life to prove the witch hunters wrong. She is from a very old family in Massachusetts and as such had a standing in the community. Her independent nature seems to be one of her outstanding characteristics and it also ends up being one of the things that her accusers use against her.
