Formerly a Captain in Jack's day, Mark Houston is now a Rear Admiral but his blue eyes are as frosty and keen as always. He stands taller than Jack's six foot three inches, and has always been more than a commanding officer to Jack. He was his friend and mentor, and when Jack's mother died when he was three, Mark and his wife Ethel had taken him in and raised him. She died thirteen years earlier, having succumbed to ovarian cancer. Mark still misses her and honors his promise to her to watch out for Jack.
