Marlantes served in the Marines. The Marines are well known for their loyalty to one another, embodied by their motto "Semper Fi" which means "always faithful." They are trained as combat soldiers, and more often than not, the first to advance. As a Marine officer, Marlantes saw extreme combat conditions.
