Margaret Bragg is Rick's mother. She was born in 1937, and she is described as having beautiful blond hair and blue eyes. Margaret grew up in poverty, as her father, a bootlegger, did not have a stable income. Her mother, Abigail, was said to be creative but odd.
When Margaret married, she had dreams of a happy life. Unfortunately, Charlie's alcoholism shattered that dream and left her struggling to care for her family. She was loner, who isolated herself. She was also a very religious woman, though she did not attend church.
Over the course of the novel, we see Rick Bragg's great admiration for his mother, and the joy he found in exposing her to new things. He saved money to buy her a home, and was with her the first time she rode in a taxi, an elevator, and an airplane.
