Heinrich marks the changing of the seasons by the changing color of the maple tree. In the spring, the leaves are a pale green with tiny red buds. In the fall, the trees sport the most dramatic colors of any tree in the woods. Heinrich makes special note that in the fall, the tree determines the color of each leaf.
