Elizabeth's mother, Mary Ramsey, is the youngest in a large family. After the sudden death of both of her parents, Mary and her siblings spend most of their time moving from place to place. Because of the constant relocating, Mama doesn't have a concept of "home". She does, however, love old mementos and learning about her family history, something that makes her feel as if she can prove she came from somewhere. Mary's grandfather wrote a book called "The Annals of Tennessee to the End of the Eighteenth Century," which she loves to reference although she's never read it. She marries young and gives birth to nine children, who are all named after her siblings.
