Malik and Alica are Zlata's parents. They love their daughter, and their main concern is her well-being. Alicia is a chemist, and she continues working until it becomes too dangerous to travel to work. Malik is a lawyer, who leaves his employment to concentrate on the welfare of his family and their continued survival.
Although her parents do their best to shield Zlata from the war, they never explain the politics behind the war (involving ethnic cleansing, etc.). Their greatest wish is to preserve their daughter's innocence.
