Major Miller is the commander of the marine force on Cochrane's naval vessels. He is likable, friendly, warm, funny, and enthusiastic, very like Sharpe's friend Harper. Miller is fearless in battle and completely loyal. He follows Cochrane's orders without question and inspires his men to do the same.
