Major John Howard was a former regimental sergeant major and an ex-policeman. He piloted one of the gliders that landed in Normandy in the early hours of June 6, 1944. Howard was born to a working class family on December 9, 1912 in London. He enlisted in 1931, left in 1938, and joined the Oxford City Police, where he worked until the beginning of the war. Howard was awarded a DSO by Montgomery in Normandy, and he worked for the Civil Service after the war.
