Pushing the age of fifty, Mafana leads a rebel contingent of thirty men who are loyal to Moses Ndebele and trying to free him. He has tight curls with white hair asserting itself through them and wrinkles lining his forehead. A former guerrilla, he was a Sergeant in the war of independence. He is relieved to relinquish control of the mission to Juan, admitting that he lacks the tactical experience or knowledge.
