Who is Luce from Nightwoods: A Novel and what is their importance?

Luce is the beautiful, young sister of a woman, Lily, who is killed. As a result, Luce takes over the care and raising of her sister's young twins. Luce is described as understanding, but understandably over her head, as the children have been through the traunatic event of witnessing Lily's death.
