Lonnie is a young man of seventeen, growing up in rural Texas in the 1950s. Lonnie probably represents Larry McMurtry, the author of the book. Lonnie is generally a good kid, and if he ever gets in trouble it is generally because he craves excitement. Lonnie is good at working with the farm animals, and he works hard, understanding that by this age he is expected to work like a man and help support his family. Lonnie never says where his parents are, but he lives on a ranch with his grandparents.
