Lily is Andrea's best friend. She is struggling to get her PhD in Russian Literature while working multiple jobs to pay for school. Lily moved in with her grandmother when she was in eighth grade. She lives life in the moment, enjoys it, and has no desire to settle down.

Over time, Lily's joyful life becomes overtaken by a drinking problem. Unfortunately, Andrea refuses to acknowledge this problem, even after it's brought to her attention by others. When Andrea is visiting Paris, she discovers that Lily is in a coma, hospitalized after driving drunk and being involved in a head on collision. Lily's accident wakes Andrea up to the fact that she has allowed her relationships to slide in deference to her job.
